Question -

Explain what would happen if in the capacitor given inExercise 2.8, a 3 mm thick mica sheet (of dielectric constant = 6) wereinserted between the plates,

(a)┬аWhile the voltage supply remained connected.

(b)┬аAfter the supply was disconnected.

Answer -

(a)┬аDielectric constant of the mica sheet,┬аk┬а=6

Initial capacitance,┬аC┬а=1.771 ├Ч 10тИТ11┬аF

Supply voltage,┬аV┬а= 100 V

Potential across the plates remains 100 V.

(b)┬аDielectric constant,┬аk┬а= 6

Initial capacitance,┬аC┬а=1.771 ├Ч 10тИТ11┬аF

If supply voltage is removed, then there will be noeffect on the amount of charge in the plates.

Charge = 1.771 ├Ч 10тИТ9┬аC

Potential across the plates is given by,
